Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Based on Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot.
The much-adored musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber comes to the intimate Des Moines Playhouse stage! With lyrics based on T.S. Eliot's poetry, Cats is a song-and-dance spectacular! The Jellicle cats gather in this alleyway once a year for the Jellicle Ball. Among the wondrous and varied cats are Jennyanydots, who teaches the mice in her home to crochet; finicky and mischievous Rum Tum Tugger; and, of course, Grizabella, the aged glamour cat. At the Jellicle Ball, one cat is chosen to go to the Heavyside Layer and be reborn. Cats is the 1983 Tony Award winner for Best Musical and Best Original Score. A true musical theatre phenomenon, Cats opened at London's New London Theatre on May 11, 1981, and ran for a record-setting 21 years. Cat's London success was nearly matched on Broadway where it ran at th eWintergarden Theatre for just over 18 years. "A triumphant piece of musical theatre... A magnificent marriage of words, music, dancing and direction... Cats is among the most exhilarating and innovative musicals ever staged." - Derek Jewell, Sunday Times "Marvelous... The stuff showbiz is made of." - Jack Tinker, The Daily Mirror "Smash hits don't come more smash than this one." - Sheridan Morely, Punch Lobby Art Exhibit ArtStop: A Culture Connection Friday, Sept. 7, 5-9 PM Saturday, Sept. 8, 11 AM-7 PM ArtStop is a two-day visual and performing arts event, including galleries, museums, performing arts centers and artists studios in the Historic East Village, Historic Valley Junction, Court Avenue Cultural District, Roosevelt Cultural District, Gateway West, Ingersoll Avenue and Des Moines Art Center.
