Pump Boys and Dinettes is a musical tribute to life by the roadside on Highway 57. Somewhere between Frog Level and Smyrna, there stands a gas station. Across the blacktop is a roadside eatery called the Double Cupp Diner. The five guys at the station have been known to do some auto repairs, but only when aided by quantities of time and beer. The Cupp sisters celebrate their home cooking with the same zeal they bring to being neighborly with the boys. Pump Boys and Dinettes is part country-rock concert and part musical theatre. It is the sort of show that feeds off the energy and pleasure of its audience, celebrating life and love in a small, southern town.

The musical, produced by The Playhouse, is under the direction of Ron Ziegler. The cast of professionals from New York and California comes to Des Moines fresh off a six-week tour of the Midwest. The Des Moines cast will feature Billy McGuigan, star of Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story and Rave On!, as Jim.

The Playhouse is Iowa's oldest and largest producing theatre. Located at the 42nd Street exit of I-235, the theatre has presented a full season of shows since 1919 and also offers a wide variety of educational experiences including classes for ages 3-1/2 to adult, theatre trips to New York, and volunteer opportunities onstage and backstage.
