The Playhouse Education Department encourages self-development through the dramatic arts, explores the skills of the theatre, fosters an appreciation of the theatre, and acquaints students with technical theatre knowledge.

Creative Drama: Pre-School and Kindergarten through Second Grade Creative drama sparks children’s natural abilities to become the characters they hear about in the books they love. This program is literature-based and designed to foster listening and cooperative skills as well as self-esteem and individual expression. Activities include:
Creative Drama I: Friday Funday Stage Door Pre-schooler with an Adult ED8046 2:30 – 3:15 P.M. Fridays Mar. 7, Apr. 11, May 16 (3 Sessions) $60 Subscribers/$65 Non-subscribers Come to a performance of Friday Funday at 1:30 P.M. and stay after for a hands-on workshop. Learn the joy of stepping into stories, cooperating with friends and building confidence. Price includes two reserved seats for Caps for Sale (Mar. 7); A Tiger, A Tune and A Trickster’s Tale (Apr. 11); and Goldilocks and the Three Bears (May16) plus a 45-minute class with Playhouse performers after each performance. Saturdays Mar. 29-Apr. 26 (5 sessions) $50 Subscribers/$55 Non-subscribers Explore stories that leap off the shelves while browsing through the Curiosity Shop’s stock of dramatic games, costumes, songs, puppets and dances. There’s a new story every week!
Theatre for the Autistic Child Grades K-2 ED8091 4:30 - 5:30 P.M. Tuesdays Mar. 25 – Apr. 22 (5 Sessions) $75 Subscribers/$85 Non-subscribers Social skills and problem-solving can be improved using theatre games and role playing. Perfect for, but not limited to, children on the autism spectrum who need a little extra direction when dealing with relationships in the classroom and on the playground. Exercises promote sensory awareness and provide the opportunity to act out problematic real-life scenarios in a safe setting. Parents are encouraged to attend the first meeting. Creative Drama III: Imagination Lab Grades 1-2 ED8054 10:30 – 11:30 A.M. Saturdays Mar. 29-Apr. 26 (5 sessions) $50 Subscribers/$55 Non-subscribers Discover how the pieces of a play come together by experimenting with story, and inventing costumes, backdrops and props. There's a new, adventurous fairy tale every week! Performance Plus: The Des Moines Playhouse and Art Center Present! Grades 2-3 ED8037 4:15 – 5:15 P.M. Basic Performance: My World and Welcome To It Grades 3-5 ED8044 12:00 – 1:30 P.M. Saturdays Feb. 16 - Apr. 26, no class on Mar. 22 (10 sessions) $145 Subscribers/$165 Non-subscribers Narnia, Oz and Hogwarts all began in the imagination. Construct unique characters while manufacturing a showcase of scenes and monologues based on a world of your own creation. Polish those scenes with rehearsal and perform for family and friends. Intermediate Performance: Play Production Grades 6-8 ED8041 4:30 – 6:30 P.M. Thursdays 1:30 – 3:30 P.M. Saturdays Feb. 14 - Mar. 29, no classes Mar. 20 & 22 (12 sessions) $220 Subscribers/$240 Non-subscribers Audition, rehearse and perform a play to learn how to polish skills. There’s more to it than showing up and learning the lines! The play this semester is The Forgotten Door, a modern space age story of Jon, a boy from outer space who accidentally falls to earth and loses his memory; however, he retains his ability to talk with animals and understand what people are thinking. Enrollment in the course guarantees a role in the play. 100% attendance required. Performance Plus: The Des Moines Playhouse and Art Center Present! Grades 4-6 ED8038 4:15 – 5:15 P.M. Seeking: Props Master or Mistress for Holes Grades 9-12 Join the production team of Holes, manage the budget and learn the fine art of designing, building, borrowing, buying and searching for the perfect props. Applicants for this position must be available to attend all production meetings and performances. Contact Kathy Pingel, director of education, for more information. TO HELP GROW THE FUND Education scholarships are funded through an endowment named for long-time Des Moines Playhouse teacher and performer, Kate Goldman. In her memory, the Goldman family established a fund to assure that any student who wants to enroll for classes in our education department may do so, regardless of financial considerations. In addition to the ongoing generosity of the Goldman family, several individuals have contributed to the fund. If the Des Moines Public Schools cancel school because of the weather, The Playhouse will cancel classes as well. If possible, we will try to make up any cancellations.
