Sarah Plain and Tall

feb 26 - mar 13, 2016
Based on the book by Patricia MacLachlan; Adapted for the stage by Joseph Robinette
Theatre:
Kate Goldman Children's Theatre

Set in the early 1900s, this play brings to life the charming, heartwarming story of a Kansas farmer, Jacob Witting, a widower with two children, Anna and Caleb, who places an ad in the newspapers seeking a wife. He receives a letter from a Sarah Wheaton of Maine who says she will visit the family for a month to see how things work out: “I will come by train. I will wear a yellow bonnet. I am plain and tall.”

Narrated by Anna, reminiscing on the eve of her wedding, the story unfolds in a fascinating flashback to that often exciting, sometimes tumultuous month when Sarah and the Wittings came to know one another and learned a few things about themselves as well.

The 4:00 PM, Saturday, Mar. 12, performance will be different from the other performances of this play. Iowa Radio Reading Information Service for the Blind and Print Handicapped (IRIS) will present live audio description, broadcast to the entire audience. The pre-show presentation, audible to the entire audience, will include descriptions of the set and costumes, background on the characters, and a plot synopsis. Live audio description of the visual elements will continue throughout the performance. The afternoon will include a tour of the stage to see and touch set pieces and meet actors. Deaf Services Unlimited will provide American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation. The best seating for ASL access if the right section.
