Fall Class Schedule

Please call if interested in enrolling in a fall class. Some classes are closed to registration.

Grade Levels: Enroll your child in the grade level he or she will be entering in Fall 2017. Children are grouped by grade level so we may appropriately serve their developmental needs.

The symbol denotes a Creative Drama class. Please refer to the Fall Class home page for a full description of Creative Drama.

 

CREATIVE DRAMA I: PICTURE PERFECT 

Pre-K and Kindergarten (must be 4 by Sept. 15, 2017), 9:00-10:00 AM, September 9-November 11

$99 Subscribers/$109 Non-Subscribers

Picture books are the introduction to the magic of storytelling for children. We’ll dramatize some of our favorites each week, and bring favorite characters and stories to life, in fun, creative atmosphere. We’ll introduce basic theatre concepts, while reinforcing literacy and cooperation skills. Students can invite a friend or parent on the last day to join in the fun!

 

 

CREATIVE DRAMA II: PAGE TO STAGE 

Grades 1-2, 10:30-11:30 AM, September 9-November 11

$99 Subscribers/$109 Non-Subscribers

Children will bring favorite books to life, and become the characters they love! We’ll act out stores, play theatre games and sing songs, all while introducing basic theatre and acting concepts while reinforcing literacy and cooperation skills. Students can invite a friend or parent on the last day to join in the fun!

 

 

 

CREATIVE CHARACTERS: FUNDAMENTALS

Grades 2-3, 9:15 AM-10:15 AM, SEPTEMBER 9-NOVEMBER 11

This hybrid of creative drama and performance was created especially for those 2nd and 3rd graders who are ready to begin a more disciplined approach to theatre. While keeping it fun and light, young actors will use scripted and original material to focus on creating a character and collaborating with others in an ensemble. This is a beginning acting class that focuses on vocal projection and fluency, expressiveness and body awareness. Parents can attend an informal showcase on the last day of class.

 

 

SPECTRUM STORIES

Ages 6-18

Saturdays, 1:00-2:30 PM

$5.00 per session (payable by check or cash at the door each session)

Join us for an exciting day of drama! Come to one session or come to all! Open to any student, Spectrum Stories is specifically designed to provide drama experiences that best support the development of pretend play, social interaction, and non-verbal communication. Each session is carefully designed to enhance creative expression of spectrum youth while supporting the profile marker needs of each participant. Developed with the guidance of Professor Gretta Berghammer of the University of Northern Iowa, and the Sturgis Youth Theatre, Spectrum Stories uses story, music, and art to bring imagination to life! Pre-registration online at dmplayhouse.com is encouraged but drop-ins are also welcome.

THE DES MOINES PLAYHOUSE AND ART CENTER PRESENT:

DR. SEUSS ON THE LOOSE

Grades 1-2, 4:30-5:45 PM, September 7-November 16

Sept. 7-28 at the Des Moines Community Playhouse (4 weeks)

Oct. 5-19 at the Des Moines Art Center (3 weeks)

Oct. 26 and Nov. 2-16 at the Des Moines Community Playhouse (4 weeks)

$125 Subscribers of Art Center or Playhouse/$135 Non-subscribers

Start at the Playhouse, rehearsing the script. Then, move to the Art Center and create the things needed, such as backdrops and props, to help tell the story. Finally, return to the Playhouse to polish your play, based on the perennially popular books of Dr. Seuss. Parents are invited on the last day of class for a special showcase!

 

 

 

THE DES MOINES PLAYHOUSE AND ART CENTER PRESENT:

PERCY JACKSON: THE LIGHTNING THIEF

Grades 3-5, 4:30-5:45 PM, September 7-November 16

Sept. 7-28 at the Des Moines Community Playhouse (4 weeks)

Oct. 5-19 at the Des Moines Art Center (3 weeks)

Oct. 26 and Nov. 2-16 at the Des Moines Community Playhouse (4 weeks)

KIDS INVENT THEATRE: TAKE THE STAGE

Grades 4-6, 10:00-11:30 AM, September 9-November 18

Wanted: young actors who are ready to take the stage by storm. Work on vocal projection, diction and body awareness, along with other performance skills. Rehearse, polish and present a play for an audience of families and friends. Taken the class before?  No problem-there’s a new play each session!  All levels of experience welcome.

 

 

 

BEGINNING TAP

Teens and Adults, 7:00-8:00 PM, October 10-November 14

A course for those who have not taken tap, or who would like a refresher. Taught by veteran Playhouse actor Mark Morrison!

 

 

INTERMEDIATE TAP

Teens and Adults, 8:00-9:00 PM, October 10-November 14

A course especially for those comfortable with the basics of tap and who have studied for at least one year. Taught by veteran Playhouse actor Mark Morrison!
