JUNE CLASSES 2018

Grade Levels: Enroll your child in the grade level he or she will be entering in Fall 2018. Children are grouped by grade level so we may appropriately serve their developmental needs.

The symbol denotes a Creative Drama class. Please refer to the Summer Class home page for a full description of Creative Drama.

 

This summer, due to major renovations to the Playhouse, we are hitting the road! The majority of our summer camps will be held at West Des Moines Christian Church, 4501 Mills Civic Pkwy, West Des Moines.

CLUBHOUSE AT THE PLAYHOUSE 
Kindergarten 2018-Grade 1, 9:30-11:30 AM, June 6-8
$75 Subscribers/$85 Non-subscribers

Based on the popular Friday Funday series, students make their own clubhouse and create a secret handshake and pledge. Open the Magic Book to discover the clues, then act out stories with costumes and props hidden in the secret Clubhouse trunk. There’s a new story every day!

FRACTURED FAIRY TALES
Grades 2-3, 1:00-4:00 PM, June 6-8

What happens when the Three Little Wolves run into the Big Bad Pig? How will the Prince wake up Snoring Beauty? Write your own endings, create your own characters, and come up with your own takes on the fairy tales we know and love. Showcase your favorites on the last day for parents!

 

THREE DAY PLAY
Grades 4-6, 9:00 AM-4:00 PM, June 6-8
$140 Subscribers/$150 Non-Subscribers

One play. Three days. Needed: young actors to audition, rehearse and bring a play to life. Help with the set, choose costumes and perform in front of an audience of families and friends on the last day of class.

 

HARRY POTTER*
Grades 4-8, 9:00 AM-4:00 PM, June 18-22
$240 Subscribers/$250 Non-subscribers
Come to King’s Cross Station, Platform 9 ¾, to enter the summer session at Hogwarts. After being assigned a house by the Sorting Hat, make a magic wand and Quidditch uniform, and attend classes in potions, divination, and defense against the dark arts. Students need to read books 1-3 before the first day of camp.

UNDER THE BIG TOP

Ladies and Gentlemen! Boys and girls of all ages! Join us under the big top this summer! Create crazy clown characters, awesome animal acts, walk the tightrope and learn the sleight of hand of magic tricks. We’ll have a sharing time on the last day for parents to attend!

 

SPOTLIGHT ON STORIES*

Grades 2-3, 1:00-4:00 PM, June 25-29

Using the books kids love to read, such as The Babysitter’s Club, Diary of a Wimpy Kid and others, perform scenes in large and small groups. We keep it light, but introduce beginning acting skills and ensemble building. Friends and family are invited on the final day to view highlights in an informal showcase. New scenes each session for returning campers!

WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE’S STAR WARS: THE FORCE DOTH AWAKEN
Grades 7-10, 9:00 AM-4:00 PM, June 25-29

It’s the best of both worlds! Join Jedi Master Nate Jorgensen in a galaxy far, far away, Shakespeare style. Based on the best-selling series by Ian Doescher, reimagine Star Wars as one of Shakespeare’s epic dramas, complete with lightsaber duels, a hero in training, and a (spoiler alert) tragic death scene, all in iambic pentameter.
