The Des Moines Community Playhouse Performance Academy presents “Aladdin Kids,” Mar. 16-17, 2018. Tickets may be purchased online at dmplayhouse.com, by phone at 515-277-6261, and at the Playhouse ticket office, 831 42nd St.

“Aladdin Kids” is a 35-minute version of the popular stage and film musical, adapted to suit young voices. When the street urchin, Aladdin, vies for the attention of the beautiful princess, Jasmine, he uses a genie’s magic power to become a prince in order to marry her. Iago, Jafar, and more are here in a musical adventure filled with magic and mayhem.

During Spring Break week, the 40 students, representing 21 elementary and middle schools, are rehearsing 9:00 AM-4:00 PM, Monday through Friday. By the end of the week, they will have learned their lines, dances, songs, and blocking for the featured production, “Aladdin Kids.” They will then have two shows, 5:00 PM, Friday, Mar. 16, and 1:00 PM, Saturday, Mar. 17, that are open to the public. The show is directed by Greg Millar, with music direction by Robin Spahr and choreography by Katie Dorrell.

The Playhouse Performance Academy is young people creating shows, under the direction of professional artistic staff, and complete with set pieces, costumes, and props, to be seen by families. Open to students in grades 3-8, Performance Academy provides an opportunity for young people to work on performance skills.

The Playhouse is Iowa’s oldest and largest producing theatre. Located at the 42nd Street exit of I-235, the theatre has presented a full season of shows since 1919 and also offers a wide variety of educational experiences including classes for ages 4 to adult, theatre trips to New York, and volunteer opportunities onstage and backstage.

The Des Moines Community Playhouse presents “Mamma Mia!,” July 13-28, 2018. Who said a wedding couldn’t be this much fun? “Mamma Mia!” centers around bride-to-be, Sophie, trying to find her long-lost father to walk her down the aisle. Not knowing which of the three possible men from her mother’s diary to invite, she brings all three of them back to the island last visited 20 years ago. With ABBA classics like “Dancing Queen,” “Waterloo” and the title number, this smash hit musical is sure to have audiences dancing in the aisles! “Mamma Mia!” has been entertaining audiences since its West End opening in 1999 and winning five Tony Awards in 2002.

The Playhouse cast includes CD Adamson, Morgan Alaimo, Brad Church, Jill Curry, Katie Dorrell, Megan Gilbreath, Chance Hejde, Gannon Henry, Sandy Henry, Kellie Kramer, Jenner Lathrop, Cody Lenz, Stevie LeWarne, Lauren Malcomson, Allyson Martens, Mitchell Nieland, Ken Reams, Kaylee Reininga, Jess Richter, Maxwell Schaeffer, Maddie Sell, Keeley Shantz, Andrew Smalley, Zachary Smith, and Lucas White.”Mamma Mia!” is directed by Playhouse executive director David R. It’s a Summer Street Party, 5:00-8:30 PM, Thursday, August 3, 2017, on Rollins Avenue between 42nd Street and 41st Street!

Hosted by #ShopRoosevelt, Roosevelt Cultural District, and the Des Moines Community Playhouse’s Curtain Crowd

The excitement begins at 5:00 PM on Rollins Avenue, between the Playhouse and the Shops at Roosevelt.

  • Juice Co will be selling smoothies, bubble tea and lemonade.
  • Food trucks from Waab’s Piggin’ Out and Sweet Treats Ice Cream Company will be on site.
  • Shops on both sides of 42nd Street will offer one-night only specials.
  • vomFASS will sample olive oil and infused vinegar spritzers.
  • Activities for children, such as bubble painting and backpack bling, will be provided by Five Monkeys, Swell, and Elements Ltd.
  • Watch a live visual art event, the Battle of the Brushes. Five artists will be given a theme and then have 90 minutes to each create a 24″ x 36″ artwork. Participating artists Eric Guyler, Luke Hubbard, Kindra Noel, Kathleen Roling, and Ben Schuh work in a variety of mediums including chalk, pastel, and oil. A silent auction will be held for the finished pieces, with 75% of proceeds going to the artists and 25% going to the non-profit Roosevelt Cultural District, currently involved in the 42nd Street beautification project.
  • Meredith Willson’s The Music Man will be on the Des Moines Community Playhouse stage a 7:30 PM that evening. Tickets are still available.
  • The Playhouse’s Curtain Crowd, a social group for young adults 18-35, will be hosting a pre-show event in the theatre’s lobby.
