Japan America Society of Iowa presents Sasago Oiwake Puppet Theater
Japan America Society of Iowa is honored to bring the unique and traditional performing art of Sasago Oiwake Puppet Theater to Des Moines for one performance only.
Sasago Village, located at a crossroad called Oiwake, at the base of the most challenging passage of the historic Koshu Travelway, has a rich cultural history. From the 17th to the 19th Centuries, it served as a rest stop for travelers preparing to journey into the mountains. During this time, the villagers mastered the art of puppet theater, performing to entertain weary travelers.
For 300 years, the people of Sasago Village have carefully preserved the puppets that belonged to their ancestors, and they continue to perform the stories of their hometown.
