 Grade Levels: Enroll your child in the camp marked for their grade. Children are grouped by grade levels so we may appropriately serve their developmental needs.

WINTER WONDERLAND

Grades 1-2, Dec. 27-29, 2017, 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM*

Students will create and explore a realm of snow and ice, where everything is “frozen.” We’ll act out different stories, including The Snow Queen, The Mitten, and others. What will happen to other familiar characters when we transport them to our winter wonderland? We’ll defrost with a hot chocolate party at  the end of the last day. After all, some stories are worth melting for!

THREE-DAY PLAY

Grades 3-7, Dec. 27-29, 2017, 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM*

Audition, rehearse, and perform a show for family and friends, all within three days, and you’ll still have time to relax before it’s time to go back to school!

EXTENDED DAY FEES FOR WINTER BREAK WORKSHOPS:  BEFORE CARE
The Playhouse can provide supervised daycare from 7:30-9:00 AM. The fee is $6.00 per session per day.  This is not a drop-in service; children must be registered.  After care is not available for Winter Break workshops.

 

CREATIVE DRAMA I: Storytime Magic   

Preschool-Kindergarten (must be at least 4 years old by 9/15/2017)

Great story books magically transport us to other times and places and allow you to put yourself in the story.  We’ll dramatize our favorites, play games and sing songs, to introduce basic theatre and acting concepts, all while reinforcing literacy, self-expression and cooperation skills. Students may invite a friend or parent on the last day to join in the fun!

CREATIVE DRAMA II: Magic Trunk Theatre   

Grade 1-2

10:30-11:30 AM, Saturdays, Jan. 6 – March 3

What’s in the magic trunk? Come each week to discover the hidden items that give us clues for that week’s story. Beginning acting skills, body awareness, self-expression and literacy skills are reinforced. CREATIVE CHARACTERS: FUNdamentals

Grades 2-3

This hybrid of creative drama and performance was created especially for those 2nd and 3rd graders who are ready to begin a more disciplined approach to theatre. While keeping it fun and light, young actors will use scripted and original material to focus on creating a character. This is also a great class for students who are interested in auditioning for a play. This is a beginning acting class in which students will take part in an informal demonstration for their parents on the final day. Taken the class before? No problem. There’s always something new to learn!

I knew the real you was in there somewhere!

Based on the book by David Shannon, about standing up to peer pressure and being yourself. Start at the Playhouse, learning the story and rehearsing the script. Then, move to the Art Center and create the things needed, such as backdrops and props, to help tell the story. Finally, return to the Playhouse to polish your play. Parents are invited on the last day of class for a special showcase!

 

 

SPECTRUM STORIES

Ages 6-18

Join us for an exciting day of drama! Come to one session or come to all! Open to any student, Spectrum Stories is specifically designed to provide drama experiences that best support the development of pretend play, social interaction and non-verbal communication. Each session is carefully designed to enhance creative expression of spectrum youth while supporting the profile marker needs of each participant. Developed with the guidance of Professor Gretta Berghammer of the University of Northern Iowa, and the Sturgis Youth Theatre, Spectrum Stories uses story, music and art to bring imagination to life! KIDS INVENT THEATRE: Explore the Stage

Learn or perfect the skills it takes to be in a play: vocal projection, diction, body awareness, physical characterization, auditioning, and more! BEEN THERE, SCENE THAT

Grades 7-9

Tuesdays, 4:30-6:00 PM, Jan. 9 – Mar. 6

Through improvisation and the use of both scripted and original scenes, short plays, and monologues, learn how to make strong character choices. Diction, vocal projection, and physicality are all emphasized. Each student will rehearse, memorize and present at least one scene, performed in a showcase held on the last day of class in the Kate Goldman Children’s Theatre.

A Whole New World

Fly me, fly me, fly me high, Magic Carpet to the skyTake me, take me, take me do, on an adventure ride with you!  Jump on your magic flying carpets and fly all over the world!  There will be fairy tales in Europe, tall tales in the United States, folk tales in Africa and more!  We’ll explore these and other stories through creative drama, role playing and lots of hands-on activities.

Students will also attend a final dress rehearsal of Aladdin KIDS on Friday afternoon.        

Students must bring a sack lunch and a snack to class each day. Before care starting at 7:30 AM. After care is not available for spring break workshops.

There’s a “Whole New World” at the Playhouse over spring break, and we want YOU to be a part of it, in this 35-minute adaptation of the Disney classic, complete with all of your favorite songs and characters! Enrollment guarantees a part in the play. Auditions will be held from 4-6pm on Friday, Mar. 9, to determine role assignment. All students enrolled must attend auditions. Performances are 5:00 PM, Friday, Mar. 16, and 1:00 PM, Saturday, Mar. 17. Each student receives 2 complimentary tickets to the performance of his or her choice. Additional tickets may be purchased for $5 each through the education department or online at dmplayhouse.com beginning Mar. 1. Seating is general admission.
